Additional The Encyclopedia of Country Living Information
|
No home, whether in the country, the city, or somewhere in between, should be without this one-of-a-kind encyclopedia — the most complete source of information available about growing, processing, cooking, and preserving homegrown foods from the garden, orchard, field, or barnyard. For more than 30 years, people have relied on its practical, step-by-step advice on basic self-sufficiency skills such as how to cultivate a garden, buy land, bake bread, raise farm animals, make sausage, milk a goat, grow herbs, churn butter, build a chicken coop, cook on a wood stove, and much, much more. First written at the height of the 1960s back-to-the-land movement, the book has been continually revised, updated, and expanded, and has grown from a self-published, mimeographed document to an exhaustive reference of more than one million words, 2,000+ recipes, and over 1,500 mail order sources. Emery’s personal advice, reflections, and anecdotes ensure that this incredibly detailed, diverse reference is as enjoyable as it is useful.

What Customers Say About The Encyclopedia of Country Living:

The author Carla Emery died in 2005. However, one caution. The last edition put out by Carla was the 2003 (9th)edition I believe. Since there are so many reviews here, I won't just repeat what they've all said. The book is terrific. (You can verify this at her website)I personally would not buy any of the editions published after her death, because who knows where they altered the book and with who's input.
I seem to remember a huge notebook.of good ideas. Met her years and years ago (Birth Center, Mt. A wonderful how-to-book. Carla has created a one-stop book for self survival.with kids, with home, with food, and life. Getting another copy.for a wonderful daughter who is now looking at making goat cheese--with the assistance of a goat or two. Vernon WA)--when she was in process of the first edition.
Questions on raising, storage and provisioning are answered in this book. This book is a must have resource. She not only has excellent instruction on every aspect, soup to nuts, but serves it with humor. Since the first publication, I have not only had a copy, but provided to friends and family.
Read it "cover to cover" and fall in love with it. Clearly, not all of us need (or want) to know how to behead a chicken or make stew out of raccoons but don't let that turn you off to the wonderful, warm knowledge that is passed along in this unique reference book. I am certainly not a professional farmer but Even for my own little back yard garden and small flock of chickens, there is a wealth of information to be found in this book. The personal accounts are touching and make this much more than just a text book. Over the last decade I have worn out two printed copies of Carlas book. I was so excited to find it for Kindle. It's like having the information passed down by a mother or grandmother.
I have learned alot reading this book. Anyone who has or wants a farm needs this book.
The book is well written, informative, and fun. A great addition to any country living persons library.
